Venus Painting

This was truly a labor of love it took a while as I had to have it finished among other projects. It’s a bust from the Ashmolean. Like the description below I painted this on stretched paper which I primed with a home-made gesso. After drawing the image I then blocked in the important shadow information and filled in the rest of the detail.

90’s Revival

So with a lot of encouragement I’ve decided to be true to myself and start from scratch. Well not exactly, I’ve always been a secret watercolour lover 😀 I also love working with different media so with some inspiration from my favorite singer/songwriter Ester Dean and artist Kate Knight, I decided to finally finish a design for a good friend Lteisha. She’s a makeup artist; and of course we artists have to help each other out so I broke my I WILL STICK TO READY MADES! mantra and allowed the geist to take control. Something in me is just yearning for the 90s So it was obvious that I’d have that vibe, partnered with Ester Dean’s flow the outcome was destined to be retro 90s. So as I’m sure you are all aware I’m obsessed with a particular colour pallet.

So I thought I’ll wing it and see what I can create. OH WORD OF ADVICE do not be fooled by your eyes when buying artist quality paints you mistake to be the primary colours red, blue & yellow. I’m sure you’ve done what I did in the past and mixed all types of combinations and still didn’t get the colours you desired, well HAVE NO FEAR! I’ll let you in on a secret most artists keep to themselves (probably thinking it’s something new 😛 ) The holy painting trinity is: Process Cyan, Process Magenta, and Processed Yellow 😀 with these three colours you can make all types (Hues) of colour, which is why your standard printer uses cyan magenta and yellow then standard primary red, blue & yellow. You can then mess around with your desired gradient tone by adding black or white to your colour mixture. So yeah started painting again in water colours, this is one outcome, I hope to perfect this technique and produce more mixed media mash ups. Lion O_O”

As an artist you are always looking around for the next best thing and you just know when you have found it. Emmanuel Awuni (a good friend) is an up and coming artist, what he doesn’t realise is the principle of the creative act ( I LOVE MARCEL DUCHAMP O_O ). Now he thinks he’s not good enough simply because of the difference in our styles of painting. But he doesn’t realise that his art SPEAKS FOR ITSELF! So I’m going to show you one of his pieces and I know you will all see what I see!

I’m not too sure of the dimensions of this painting. Knowing Mani this is probably acrylic.

Folkestone Harbour

It was a nice and clear today, so I had to go out. A good friend of mine, Josh, suggested Folkestone so I thought why not. We went as far as the Harbour and made our way to the art studios. We met Kate Knight an artist and I must say the future of the visual arts looks GREAT! Check out her website: www.kateknight.org. and I need to be more prepared! For some reason I left my camera at home but thank God I had my phone camera handy. It’s amazing what phone cameras can achieve!

tutankhamun Drawing

As a child I have always had a fascination with all things Egypt. I love the history and Egypt’s rich culture, not to mention the role Egypt played in God’s plan for the Jewish nation. The great exodus in which the Israelite people were lead by Moses and delivered from the hand of the Pharaoh. Off topic; one great historical find I always remember is that  of the Boy King Tut. Not so much about his history (though I do like to read about it once in a while) but more for the treasure. There’s something about being a child and treasure, the moment I looked at the death mask, I didn’t have thoughts of dead mummies JUST GOLD!!! O_O and what I think could be Lapis Lazuli? BUT WOW! Up to now I still want one of these and I will have one >:) The drawing is of a death mask I found whilst surfing the web, I’m not too sure if it’s a picture of the real thing but who cares IT LOOKS AWESOME!!!!

Chitenge Jacket

I’ve always been a fan of Yinka Shonibare, Looking back at my Foundation journal I noticed that I read an article on his artwork, I cannot remember where but I remember catching a glimpse of his costumes made up entirely of African textiles and was amazed at the sheer volume and and detail of his work. A part of me always wanted a Chitenge jacket, but I still don’t know where to get one (mostly due to my picky attitude towards clothing). I’ve only ever made tiny garments and that was only during my fashion pathway week during my foundation year. SO I’M DETERMINED TO MAKE MYSELF ONE. Of course I’m lazy; so short cuts have to be made. So I raided my wardrobe and found two suit jackets I used to wear back in A-level (3 years ago O_O oh time) coupled with my boredom I thought why not practice first? So for some reason I want to hand stitch it all on….. to say the least I did the collar and gave up -_- I’m going to have to find some form of motivation to kick start the next project as the collar alone took me 3 hours! Somehow I’m liking the collar on it’s own so I’m thinking of leaving the Jacket as it is 😀

Tiger Cub

So as part of my tiger sketches I was initially thinking of just drawing adult tigers. So the thought sprung up out of nowhere, ‘tiger cubs’. Just shows how my mind works anyway here’s another A5 study of a tiger, this time it’s a cute tiger cub. I’m a sucker for cuteness 🙂 This sketch took me 2 hours. And it’s official I’m nocturnal. -_-

Back to the Basics 2

So I recently caught up with one of my best friends, it was a good day and I’m glad to know that one of my close friends visits my blog regularly. And just like a good friend she caught me on my laziness; as I don’t update my blog that often. So following her advice 2013 will be the year I blog like CRAZY!!!!! It’ll now feature near enough all I do art wise, including reviews of art books I’ve been reading recently. Now back to my tiger series, I’ve decided to draw in pencil, I mean I’m good at drafting and I’m not going to force myself to constantly paint in poster paint, somethings are just meant to be hated 😛 So here’s an A5 drawing I did today took me 3 hours so not bad. I’ll be exploring scale and contrast in a limited space of my A5 window. Though I would like the area around the eye to be darker so I have a feeling I’ll be mixing mediums again.

The Scarf?

First of all HAPPY NEW YEAR EVERYONE, God Bless. Came back from a great church service and couldn’t sleep so I thought I’d update my blog. I’ve been bored so for the past three days I’ve been knitting; I always do something crafty before a big art project. I plan to paint something big probably a tiger. Anyway I had planned to make a scarf and was willing to knit for 10 days straight just to finish it; then the repetition of it all got to me and I couldn’t take anymore, so I was left with a pathetic piece of knitted fabric. I still wanted something to keep my neck warm… So I made what I can only describe as a snood? The end result is actually better than a scarf I feel, I may have to make more probably try out different colours. BUT I’M NOW READY TO PAINT 😀

Back to the Basics

So I’m back home…. and I’m already bored. As I don’t have my regular art supplies I’m reduced to the stuff I left behind. I was sure I left some Indian Ink behind, but nope all I found was poster paint. I remembered my frustration whenever I tried to get a solid colour with the stuff, having to add layer upon layer to get the result I wanted only to leave it as it took so long; Ah GCSE 😀 So I feel like making a series of Tigers, they seem to be everywhere at the moment. I love the creatures and if you remember a few blog posts back I did a short series then of the amazing creatures. Now not to offend any non believers, but I’m amazed whenever I see God’s creation at it’s best. Love these creatures, I can be so happy to have a reserve and simply sketch animals all day. So this is the first of hopefully many AND I WILL OVERCOME MY HATRED FOR POSTER PAINT!
