Chitenge Jacket

I’ve always been a fan of Yinka Shonibare, Looking back at my Foundation journal I noticed that I read an article on his artwork, I cannot remember where but I remember catching a glimpse of his costumes made up entirely of African textiles and was amazed at the sheer volume and and detail of his work. A part of me always wanted a Chitenge jacket, but I still don’t know where to get one (mostly due to my picky attitude towards clothing). I’ve only ever made tiny garments and that was only during my fashion pathway week during my foundation year. SO I’M DETERMINED TO MAKE MYSELF ONE. Of course I’m lazy; so short cuts have to be made. So I raided my wardrobe and found two suit jackets I used to wear back in A-level (3 years ago O_O oh time) coupled with my boredom I thought why not practice first? So for some reason I want to hand stitch it all on….. to say the least I did the collar and gave up -_- I’m going to have to find some form of motivation to kick start the next project as the collar alone took me 3 hours! Somehow I’m liking the collar on it’s own so I’m thinking of leaving the Jacket as it is 😀

Tiger Cub

So as part of my tiger sketches I was initially thinking of just drawing adult tigers. So the thought sprung up out of nowhere, ‘tiger cubs’. Just shows how my mind works anyway here’s another A5 study of a tiger, this time it’s a cute tiger cub. I’m a sucker for cuteness 🙂 This sketch took me 2 hours. And it’s official I’m nocturnal. -_-

Back to the Basics 2

So I recently caught up with one of my best friends, it was a good day and I’m glad to know that one of my close friends visits my blog regularly. And just like a good friend she caught me on my laziness; as I don’t update my blog that often. So following her advice 2013 will be the year I blog like CRAZY!!!!! It’ll now feature near enough all I do art wise, including reviews of art books I’ve been reading recently. Now back to my tiger series, I’ve decided to draw in pencil, I mean I’m good at drafting and I’m not going to force myself to constantly paint in poster paint, somethings are just meant to be hated 😛 So here’s an A5 drawing I did today took me 3 hours so not bad. I’ll be exploring scale and contrast in a limited space of my A5 window. Though I would like the area around the eye to be darker so I have a feeling I’ll be mixing mediums again.

The Scarf?

First of all HAPPY NEW YEAR EVERYONE, God Bless. Came back from a great church service and couldn’t sleep so I thought I’d update my blog. I’ve been bored so for the past three days I’ve been knitting; I always do something crafty before a big art project. I plan to paint something big probably a tiger. Anyway I had planned to make a scarf and was willing to knit for 10 days straight just to finish it; then the repetition of it all got to me and I couldn’t take anymore, so I was left with a pathetic piece of knitted fabric. I still wanted something to keep my neck warm… So I made what I can only describe as a snood? The end result is actually better than a scarf I feel, I may have to make more probably try out different colours. BUT I’M NOW READY TO PAINT 😀

Back to the Basics

So I’m back home…. and I’m already bored. As I don’t have my regular art supplies I’m reduced to the stuff I left behind. I was sure I left some Indian Ink behind, but nope all I found was poster paint. I remembered my frustration whenever I tried to get a solid colour with the stuff, having to add layer upon layer to get the result I wanted only to leave it as it took so long; Ah GCSE 😀 So I feel like making a series of Tigers, they seem to be everywhere at the moment. I love the creatures and if you remember a few blog posts back I did a short series then of the amazing creatures. Now not to offend any non believers, but I’m amazed whenever I see God’s creation at it’s best. Love these creatures, I can be so happy to have a reserve and simply sketch animals all day. So this is the first of hopefully many AND I WILL OVERCOME MY HATRED FOR POSTER PAINT!

Let There Be Light!

So I’ve finished my 1st semester yet for some reason I can’t help but make stuff. I recently had a bookmaking workshop; Our tutor had lots of paper left from our practice and was about to expose of it. You know me; I had to have it, so I spent the majority of my lunch and studio time cutting up bits of paper. In a nutshell, I tried to make another vase, it looked okay but I didn’t like the finished product. Perfectionist me tried my hardest to reshape the vase…. and it broke -_-

But I looked at the pattern on the inside and wondered what it would be like illuminated. I have a desk lamp. AND NOW I’M GOING TO MAKE A WHOLE RANGE OF LIGHTS! O_O”

BARNEY!

So Simone, Ryan (and his girlfriend) and I went to the lighting event held at the Natural History Museum; it was AWESOME but Simone had essays to write so we left early. Whilst on the bus, a couple and their little girl came on and Simone and the kid had a convo. So Simone asks “what do you for Christmas?” the girl replies ” a Dinosaur!” To conclude the future looks bright for the next generation (for Oxford anyway :P). The Natural History has this massive T-Rex by the entrance – which I’ll have next to my grand staircase but Simone is convinced she’s going to have one too but I’ll have it first MWAHAHA >:) – that coupled with the convo between the girl and Simone; it was obvious that I had to do something with Dinosaurs! Alice (good friend and block mate) has a brother  that does origami and had a book on Dinosaurs! SEE FAITH!!!!!! you can guess what happened next… I spent 30 minutes trying to figure out the cryptic folds of the book’s illustrations -_- BUT I DID IT (with a few alterations :P) and for some reason I did it with purple paper; a subliminal message from my past. And I never realised, until now, just how camp Barney was!

1st Semester Assessment

So I had to showcase some of my work for my end of semester assessment and I’m on this postmodern vibe so I thought why not just show that. This is my….. Lord knows what it is. It’s been called an installation so I’ll go with that 😛 Sorry for the crappy image quality I left my camera at home -_- so I’m relying on my omnia 7.

Origami Fail 2

So I had to revisit my origami phase and decided to Google interesting patterns. So I spend literally a whole day obsessing over this vase and finished it only to see that I had 6 minutes to go catch the bus which somehow I got 😀 And I have awesome friends: Wolf made a prawn stir-fry, Callum made a cake and Lulu brought a pizza! on top of that Meg made banana bread… just comes to show the stereotypes of uni students doesn’t imply in our block *black woman snap* But yeah the vase involved 340 pieces and took me 8 hours to finish, probably because half way I had no idea what I was doing and I spent too much time making each piece -_- but I do hope to make a bigger vase!
