The Sublime O_O

So we had a lecture today on the sublime, it scares me because somethings that were said is what I think of from time to time. We artists are very interesting beings, like our Bezzy mates the philosophers, we like to question everything. My teachers knew this and would often get frustrated because I never excepted what they said, I always wanted to know more. MORE! I have a problem because I often drift in and out of conscious thought. My friends are only beginning to notice this and it’s getting them concerned (LOL and I’m actually lolling…. sad that ‘lol’ has now become part of my everyday vocabulary) but I reassure them that I’m fine just staring into the abyss. The sublime is an interesting topic because it covers the theory that man’s deep understanding of things can not be there own but one of a super being. And when ever I read that I’m like THANK YOU JESUS!!!!!!!! If you get to know me for me you’d know that I’m a complete air head (no colour discrimination! we blondes will rule you one day) but there are times when a thought enters my brain and unlocks different ideas and connects them to form some kind of message that makes some sort of sense. IT CREEPS ME OUT BECAUSE I HAVE NO SAY IN IT. The germans where on to something, I guess there’s a reason why they called it the GEIST!!!

So looking back at my photos I noticed an image that I’ve always wanted to blog about. The artist is unknown (because I didn’t ask for his name) but I do know that HE LOVE MEGAN FOX. Now this could be open to interpretation (like all things) we can choose to view this artwork as a man’s way of portraying his lust for Megan Fox (who by the way looks HAWT but she’s over done the real-life photoshop, now she looks too symmetrical, miss the old Megan but hey her face) But Look at the time and effort he’s taken on the artwork and the fact that this is all done by biro…. AMAZING! This was truly a labor of love and look at the smile on his face does that look like the smile of a perv (don’t answer that you’ll ruin my image of him plus I notice the money but that’s out of the public’s response to the art WE NEED TO BE FED TOO!!) So judge art as you see fit but remember IT’S ALL ART!! (MARCEL DUCHAMP AHH LOVE) AND DO YOU SEE THE BLEACHED DEMIN Yup we arties are DA TREND SETTERS. And he wears it well.

Now I can’t lie as a christian it’s amazing what theories I choose to influence what I think of people, the illuminati had to be my all time favorite, I never was scared of the concept, I just liked to ask questions, and when I question people they often take it as me being nosy, I guess my afro mindset of ‘if you don’t know, ask’ is wrong. But I do know that I can make assumptions, some are obvious but others are not even worth mentioning, but I fall victim to the Freudian slip (in my case Freudian sentences) but I’m learning. Now of course there’s one person I used to analyse not based on her fame but more on her character, and lets face it she’s HAWT and incredibly hard working but why does she grab people’s attention? Yes SHE’S HAWT O_O” but why do we think that? My answer came when I talked to my good friend and diva Emma when she pointed out just how symmetrical Rihanna’s face is and I was like JESUS DID YOU HEAR THAT :O GREAT TRUTH!!!!!! I never realised just how obsessed we were with symmetry but it’s SO TRUE, now of course with the wonders of modern technology she looks GREAT! and we see this and think then why doesn’t Jay Z see this? Possible affair? answer…..NO! because there’s one woman who keeps them hoes in check, there’s a reason why she sang ring the alarm, and Jay knows that if ever he even thinks of doing something stupid Sasha will illuminate him before he has the chance to apologise. Just comes to show you that if you can’t gain someone’s love by kindness you can equally achieve it by FEAR >:`) but I’ll be good for now, just a warning to those that think I can’t spazz out 😀

So I’m testing out watercolor techniques this along with the tigers will be an ongoing series, I’m banning myself from tracing (I love youtube artists that think we don’t know they traced the outline before adding the detail but don’t be mad it’s not a new concept google camera obscura) and focusing on my artistic expressionist side. So plenty drama on da canvas 😛 But as usual I start small to work out what needs to be done on a large scale.

So as it’s slowly being revealed to you all I do like to make stuff, now I don’t consider myself fashionable but as cliche as it sounds I have a passion for fashion. (you can’t hear me but I’m laughing my shame away just at the thought of writing that) Anywho I’m getting ready for summer but the geist informed me round Christmas time that it was time for dungarees; to mask my shame I never told anyone that I bought a pair until now of course because the excitement for summer has taken over. These were a pair I bought on ebay from jellybellyvintageleeds. They were full length but I wasn’t a fan of the bagginess, So I committed murder and chopped up the bottom half and tailored it to a perfect fit. This was in January. The frustration from cutting, sewing, pricking and bleeding several times made me take a well deserved break from the nonsense. But it gave me time to think of what else I could do with it. So I took a trip down memory lane and remembered that during my trip back to Zambia I bought various fabrics back with me to see what I could do with them. And as if I was getting pimp-slapped, the idea came and inspiration with obsession and determination and the zeal to defeat my dungaree grief, took over and I finished my mini project. Always wanted a pair of dungarees as a kid and now I HAVE THEM >:`D (scar for extra added evil) ah I’m so 90s.

Site Specific

So to kick-start our second semester we are yet again paired up in groups of two creating work; our first topic is site specific. Now of course there are many ways we could interpret this but we had to stick to the very basic understanding of the term ‘Site SPECIFIC’. This time I’ve been partnered up with Fred Conybeare-cross (thank you facebook) an amazing artist who has a traditional mind set so we gel well. Fred took pictures of the environment surrounding our campus building and found this great building with an overhang supported by nothing, so it was like a scene when you hear a heavenly choir humming in the background as you stare at the highlighted answer to your prayer O_O” We then began to think of ideas of how we could create work under this space, started sketching and came up with the same idea!!!!! and this was the outcome. I didn’t collect Fred’s shots but here’s my amateur attempt once again.

So to kick start our 2 Semester Sam and Tom decided to make a sculptural installation made up of easels, frames and paint. I must say I did like the outcome and the view from widows contributed to the piece in a weird and wonderful way. I love the linear patterns created by the easels in contrast with the zigzag formations created by the frames. Filament 14

So I’M BACK AT BROOKES!!!! So happy to be near art again O_O” Now we all know as an artist it’s great to get your name out there, so Magdalen Road Studios kick started a new project called Filament 14, a residency whereby new artists get a taste of the real “art world” creating works of art and exhibiting it in the same space. So Jean Wykes was the first Brookes student to start the residency and to support Jean I thought I’d show a small snippet of the work she had up in the studio. The rest of her exhibition included a performance and a video piece on the history of Cowley Road, a well-known road here in Oxford, great restaurants, bars and cafes with influences from everywhere around the world, it’s like the centre of student life here! So Jean had an installation of triangles set in a uniform pattern that gradually broke down into individual pieces, representing the diverse cultural identities found in Cowley 😀 I’ll be part of a collective making work in the same space 😀 Can’t Wait!

90s Revisited

So I couldn’t sleep -_- I looked at Lteisha’s design and wondered what else I could do with it. Then I remembered, back in the day I would scribble over images with biro, and it was always hair; I don’t know why. So I did the same with the design and even I’m happy with the result 😀

This was truly a labor of love it took a while as I had to have it finished among other projects. It’s a bust from the Ashmolean. Like the description below I painted this on stretched paper which I primed with a home-made gesso. After drawing the image I then blocked in the important shadow information and filled in the rest of the detail.

90’s Revival

So with a lot of encouragement I’ve decided to be true to myself and start from scratch. Well not exactly, I’ve always been a secret watercolour lover 😀 I also love working with different media so with some inspiration from my favorite singer/songwriter Ester Dean and artist Kate Knight, I decided to finally finish a design for a good friend Lteisha. She’s a makeup artist; and of course we artists have to help each other out so I broke my I WILL STICK TO READY MADES! mantra and allowed the geist to take control. Something in me is just yearning for the 90s So it was obvious that I’d have that vibe, partnered with Ester Dean’s flow the outcome was destined to be retro 90s. So as I’m sure you are all aware I’m obsessed with a particular colour pallet.

So I thought I’ll wing it and see what I can create. OH WORD OF ADVICE do not be fooled by your eyes when buying artist quality paints you mistake to be the primary colours red, blue & yellow. I’m sure you’ve done what I did in the past and mixed all types of combinations and still didn’t get the colours you desired, well HAVE NO FEAR! I’ll let you in on a secret most artists keep to themselves (probably thinking it’s something new 😛 ) The holy painting trinity is: Process Cyan, Process Magenta, and Processed Yellow 😀 with these three colours you can make all types (Hues) of colour, which is why your standard printer uses cyan magenta and yellow then standard primary red, blue & yellow. You can then mess around with your desired gradient tone by adding black or white to your colour mixture. So yeah started painting again in water colours, this is one outcome, I hope to perfect this technique and produce more mixed media mash ups. As an artist you are always looking around for the next best thing and you just know when you have found it. Emmanuel Awuni (a good friend) is an up and coming artist, what he doesn’t realise is the principle of the creative act ( I LOVE MARCEL DUCHAMP O_O ). Now he thinks he’s not good enough simply because of the difference in our styles of painting. But he doesn’t realise that his art SPEAKS FOR ITSELF! So I’m going to show you one of his pieces and I know you will all see what I see!

I’m not too sure of the dimensions of this painting. Knowing Mani this is probably acrylic.

tutankhamun Drawing

As a child I have always had a fascination with all things Egypt. I love the history and Egypt’s rich culture, not to mention the role Egypt played in God’s plan for the Jewish nation. The great exodus in which the Israelite people were lead by Moses and delivered from the hand of the Pharaoh. Off topic; one great historical find I always remember is that of the Boy King Tut. Not so much about his history (though I do like to read about it once in a while) but more for the treasure. There’s something about being a child and treasure, the moment I looked at the death mask, I didn’t have thoughts of dead mummies JUST GOLD!!! O_O and what I think could be Lapis Lazuli? BUT WOW! Up to now I still want one of these and I will have one >:) The drawing is of a death mask I found whilst surfing the web, I’m not too sure if it’s a picture of the real thing but who cares IT LOOKS AWESOME!!!!
